88-Year-Old Chick-fil-A Founder Reaches $25 Million Scholarship Milestone;

Honored at Aug. 24 Downtown Atlanta Ceremony


Chain to Award $1.4 Million in Scholarships This Year Alone to Restaurant Team Members


ATLANTA (Aug. 24, 2009) – In the midst of companies looking for ways to trim costs and reduce budgets, Chick-fil-A continues its 36-year commitment to education with founder S. Truett Cathy reaching his  $25 million Leadership Scholarship milestone during a year when the restaurant chain has allocated $1.4 million in scholarships to be awarded to its restaurant team members.

On Aug. 24 at 10 a.m., Cathy will be joined by Ambassador Andrew Young and other local political and community leaders at a ceremony commemorating this milestone and acknowledgement of the 25,000th Leadership Scholarship to Chick-fil-A team member Jamie Dyche of Bossier City, La. The ceremony will be held at Atlanta’s downtown 23-foot Chick-fil-A "Climb with Care and Confidence" statue located in the Fairlie-Poplar Historic District, across from Woodruff Park.

A plaque commemorating the milestone also will be unveiled at the statue that was commissioned in 1995 by Georgia State University art students to celebrate Cathy’s 10,000 scholarship milestone. The statue depicts people reaching upward, being helped by and helping others to climb an arch of books.

The venue is an appropriate ending to the day as it reflects other educational programs the chain supports. Chick-fil-A and the Atlanta Braves are partners in the All-Star Student Achievers program which awards Braves tickets and Chick-fil-A coupons to Georgia’s high-achieving K-12 students.

In addition to Dyche, who works for franchised Operator John Roden at the stand-alone Bossier City Chick-fil-A restaurant at I-220 & Airline Drive, Eddie White will also be part of the day’s milestone celebration. White, one of the earliest employees at Cathy’s first restaurant, the Dwarf Grill from which the Chick-fil-A chain was founded, was a recipient of a personal check Cathy wrote 54 years ago to help make up the lacking funds he needed to attend college. Granted scholarships that have now grown to include 25,000 restaurant team members benefitting from the founder's commitment to education with Chick-fil-A's Leadership Scholarship program formally organized in 1973.

“I realized very early in my career that our restaurants present an opportunity to do more than just provide great service and food. They enable us to mentor our restaurant team members by teaching them core values and how to achieve excellence, as well as encouraging continued education with scholarships,” said Cathy. “In these challenging economic times, we’re thrilled to be able to help Jamie and some nearly 1,400 other team members this year reach their academic goals so they will have the necessary tools to secure a bright future for themselves and our nation.”

Cathy will be joined by other milestone scholarship winners for the celebration including first Leadership Scholarship recipient Larry Jackson, Roswell, Ga., who worked at the first Chick-fil-A restaurant at Greenbriar Shopping Center and graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech; and 20,000th recipient Erica Lampkin, of metro-Augusta, Ga., who graduated from Atlanta’s Spelman College in May and plans to attend medical school. Also attending the events is recipient Dr. David Vaillancourt, founder of the National Math Bee, who symbolizes the great achievements of many scholarship recipients who have carried out Cathy’s vision to have a positive influence on the world.

Restaurant team members such as Dyche, who will be attending Centenary College in Shreveport, La., in the fall, have attended more than 2,400 colleges, universities and other educational institutions across the country with the aid of the Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship. In Georgia alone, more than 4,800 recipients have attended over 190 schools.

Following college graduation, many of these restaurant team members pursue full-time careers at Chick-fil-A, such as franchisee Roden who also received one of the chain’s scholarships while working during high school for Chick-fil-A.

The Leadership Scholarship program provides $1,000 scholarships to its restaurant team members who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of work, education, community and personal leadership development.

Chick-fil-A also awards S. Truett Cathy Scholar Awards, which provide additional $1,000 scholarships to the top 25 Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship recipients each year. Implemented in 1996 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Chick-fil-A’s scholarship program, this year’s S. Truett Cathy Award recipients brought the total awarded to $325,000.

Additionally, Chick-fil-A’s WinShape Foundation provides thousands of dollars in scholarships to qualifying students enrolled in Berry College in Rome, Ga. WinShape’s partnership with Berry College offers joint four-year scholarship funding to students of up to $32,000. To date, the foundation has awarded approximately 951 scholarships to students from across the nation to attend Berry, one of the top regional liberal arts schools in the country.

The Council for Aid to Education has indicated that no other company in terms of size does as much in the scholarship area as Chick-fil-A. “Like the name of our foundation, WinShape, it has always been my goal to help shape winners out of young people,” added Cathy.



Free chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A for sports fans

On Labor day, you can get a free chicken sandwich at chic-fil-A.

All you have to do is show up in sports related apparel from 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM on September 7 and you'll be golden.  IT can be professional or college gear or even a little league uniform.  Socks, hat, T-shirt, jersey... they all count so any gear at all will work

The reason behind the promotion is a game in the Georgia Dome that Chick-fil-A is sponsoring.   The game in Atlanta is between the University of Alabama and Virginia tech and will be televised on a national level on September 5th and should bring some good promotion for the company that perfected the chicken sandwich.


The promotion is pegged to a football game between the University of Alabama and Virginia Tech on Sept. 5. The game, which Chick-fil-A sponsors, will be held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta and will be televised nationally on ABC.

CLEMSON — Herb Tyler, franchise owner, is opening a new Chick-fil-A restaurant in Clemson on July 23rd and is anxious to serve the good people in the foothills area. Herb has a servants heart and the 65 full and part time people that will be a part of this new store were selected because they have the same attitude.  Applications are still being accepted as of this writing.

This is the second store for Herb and his wife, Karil.  Their original store is located in Seneca and they opened that in 2003. 

4,100 square feet, the new store in CLemson is located on Tiger Boulevard and was opened without a dime of stimulus money.

Situated next door to a McDonald's restaurant, this new Chick-fil-A restaurant boasts free Wi-Fi and an indoor playground for children and will seat 94 inside with room for an additional 10 on the outside patio.

The grand opening will offer a promotion for the first 100 customers.  Each of the 100 will get a free Chick-filA meal for a year each and every week.

Tyler offered the same promotion when he opened the Seneca restaurant and was real pleased with the results and expects people to be camping out in the parking lot 24 hours leading up to the grand opening.

Chick-fil-A ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ Cows Take Silver Effie Award

for Sustained Success Campaign


ATLANTA (June 4, 2009) – The Chick-fil-A® “Eat Mor Chikin®” Cows, who have been entertaining consumers with renegade antics to push their pro-chicken messages for the past 14 years, have been recognized with a Silver Effie award in the “Sustained Success” category for creativity and effectiveness in advertising. Executives from Chick-fil-A and their Dallas-based advertising agency, The Richards Group, were on hand for ceremonies in New York to receive the award on June 3.

Created by the New York American Marketing Association in 1968, the Effie award has become one of the pre-eminent honors in the advertising industry. Effies are awarded to campaigns that meet or exceed advertising objectives – advertising that works in the marketplace. Another distinguishing characteristic of the Effie award is that it judges campaigns not only on creativity, but on all disciplines that make up a successful campaign, including planning, market research, media, creative and account management.

This is the second Effie award the Eat Mor Chikin Cow campaign has received. The campaign also was recognized in 1998 with a silver Effie for “creativity and effectiveness” in the fast food/restaurant category.

“Winning a second Effie award is a high compliment to the ‘Eat Mor Chikin’ Cow campaign,” said Steve Robinson, Chick-fil-A’s senior vice president of marketing. “The Effies are known globally to advertisers and agencies as one of the most sought-after honors in the industry. The Cows have continued to stay popular with our audiences. Chick-fil-A first introduced the Cow campaign in 1995 as a three-dimensional billboard concept depicting a black-and-white cow sitting atop the back of another cow painting the words “Eat Mor Chikin” on the billboard. To everyone’s surprise, the Cows’ clever self-preservation message would be the beginning of a campaign still running strong 14 years later. In addition to clever roadside billboards, the Eat Mor Chikin Cows are the focal point of Chick-fil-A’s in-store point-of-purchase materials, promotions, radio and TV advertising, and clothing and merchandise sales.

In 2007, the Chick-fil-A Eat Mor Chikin Cows were recognized as one of America’s most popular advertising icons in a public vote sponsored by Advertising Week and became the newest members of New York’s Madison Avenue Advertising Walk of Fame. A permanent banner to recognize this achievement now hangs on Madison Avenue in New York City.

The Cows were also inducted into The Outdoor Advertising Association of America’s (OAAA) OBIE Hall of Fame. OAAA presents the award annually to brands that have displayed outstanding outdoor creative work over an extended period of time. In 1997, the Eat Mor Chikin campaign took home a Silver Lion at the Cannes Advertising Festival, and in 1996 the campaign earned the OBIE award for outdoor advertising.

On July 10, 2009, Chick-fil-A will once again honor the Eat Mor Chikin Cows during the chain’s fifth annual Cow Appreciation Day celebration, an unofficial, yet nationally recognized holiday. Cow-Clad Customers Get Free Chick-fil-A Meals on Cow Appreciation Day, July 10



ATLANTA, June 30, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ----In the 'moo'd for a free meal? As part of the chain's fifth-annual Cow Appreciation Day celebration, Chick-fil-A(R) restaurants are offering a free meal (breakfast, lunch or dinner) to any customer who visits one of the 1,440-plus participating restaurants fully dressed as a cow on Friday, July 10.

Customers dressed head to hoof as a cow will be rewarded with a free Chick-fil-A Meal, which includes an entree of choice, a side item and a Dr Pepper(R) (or other beverage choice). For those who are too timid to wear full cow costumes, Chick-fil-A will award a complimentary entree to customers partially dressed in cow attire, such as a cow-spotted scarf, purse, hat or other accessory.

Chick-fil-A has launched a special website dedicated to the occasion, www.cowappreciationday.com. In addition to providing further details about the event, the site offers cow costume tips as well as downloadable cow spots, masks and other bovine-themed accessories for customers to use to create their costumes. The site also will host two online photo contests: one contest for adults 18 and older and another for children 10 and under. Both contests will award free Chick-fil-A products for a year to the best cow-dressed customers, and children will also have the opportunity to win a $1,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bond and a digital camera through the kid's photo contest.

Now in its fifth year, Chick-fil-A's Cow Appreciation Day continues to build momentum. Last year's event - and the resulting turnout - confirmed that Chick-fil-A has a strong following of customers willing to go to great lengths to show their appreciation for cows. With the amount of unemployment out there and the problems in the economy, it's good to know there are decent jobs with good opportunities still available.

A team leader is a great job at Chick-fil-A if you are energetic, like people and want to get a well rounded experience in the restaurant business. Chick-fil-A is in between fast food and a regular sit down restaurant in terms of quality of food and level of service.

A team leader does not work for Chick-fil-A per se, he or she works for a franchisee who owns the business and has the rights to use the company name as well as offer the products on the menu that are unique to Chick-fil-A.

It's beneficial to be results oriented and want to be continuing to excel in all areas of service as the restaurant is continually evolving to attain perfection. Excellent written and verbal skills are also necessary as you will be directing a crew of others and will need to communicate the procedures of the restaurant.
Interpersonal relationships with the customer base is also required as a team leader because the clientele is to be treated as invited guests. A team leader can plan on spending time in the dining room meeting and greeting customers, solving problems and explaining the menu.

A team leader can expect to work 35 - 40 hours a week and be paid well above minimum wage and never has to work on Sundays as the restaurant chain has never opened on Sundays.

So if you are planning on a career in the restaurant industry and are considering Chick-fil-A remember that even though you may have the title "Team Leader", you will need to plan on getting your hands a little dirty in addition to leading a team of quality individuals in supplying top notch food and great service.

Choosing a job can turn into a career and that unemployment is very bad these days so be sure to consider the above information if you are considering employment in the restaurant field.
